Scope and Content

File containing letters from the general public (including parents, teachers, head teachers, teaching unions, academics and other interested individuals), sent either to Brian Cox or Rhodes Boyson in response to articles they contributed to newspapers, or television and radio appearances made by both men. The largest proportion of material relates to a televised version of Cox's lecture at the Royal Institution, 'The Notion of Equality is a Threat to Education', followed by a debate on a BBC2 programme entitled Controversy on 6 September 1973. The material also includes responses to a letter printed in the Guardian from the staff of Failsworth Secondary Modern School in Manchester, about raising the school leaving age (October 1967), and to a televised Oxford Union debate involving Cox (June 1971). The rest of the material relates to articles or appearances by Boyson in 1970, 1972 and 1973. Some of the letters also relate to: the NCES, the Black Papers; and Boyson's election as an MP in March 1974. Also includes an offprint of an article entitled 'Science, technology and the changing role of the professional engineer' by R.C. Parker, from The Chartered Mechanical Engineer (March 1973) (/96).
