Scope and Content

Large file of correspondence and papers relating to the Campaign for the Verbal Arts, which Brian Cox organized along with friend and fellow lecturer, Alan Young, and Anne Cluysenaar of Sheffield Polytechnic. The file contains: copies of the Verbal Arts Manifesto; correspondence with potential and actual signatories to the manifesto, and with the other organizers; publicity material for the Arvon Foundation and for the Verbal Arts manifesto and related conferences; and publications and photocopied articles which relate in some way to the campaign.

Correspondents include: Peter Abbs; Anne Cluysenaar (extensive correspondence); Christopher Butler; David Craig; Ron Hammond; Philip Hobsbaum; Roger Knight; Colin MacCabe; John Moat; Roy Niblett; Anne Ridler; John Saunders; Peter Scott; Roy Shaw; Jon Silkin; and Clive Wilmer. There are also a number of copy letters from Brian Cox to Ted Hughes, who was involved in the Arvon Foundation and in organizing courses on creative writing with John Moat; with one letter from Hughes's wife, Carol (/148). The file also includes a typescript poem by Anne Cluysenaar entitled 'Kissing Bridge' (/49) and a copy of the first typed draft of a play for radio by Cluysenaar entitled Talking (/160).
