Notes compiled by Thomas Williams when an undergraduate at Cambridge University.

MS.Add.4308: Principles of hydrostatics, 1809, 122 folios.

The book is possibly a compendium of lecture notes. Until p. 170 the versos are used for notes, additions and diagrams. From p. 172 onwards the text is on the versos as well as the rectos. On a flyleaf at the beginning: 'Thos. P. Williams, St. John's College, Cambridge, January 2d, 1809'.

MS.Add.4309: Notes on Newton, 1809, 190 folios.

The text is on the rectos only. The versos are used for diagrams. On fo. 2: 'Thos. P. Williams, St. John's College, Cambridge, Octb. 12th, 1809'.

MS.Add.4310: Notes on astronomy and mathematics, 1810, 51 folios.

(Fo. 3) Notes on astronomy and mathematics. The text is on the rectos only. There are occasional notes and diagrams on the versos; (fo. 37) rough diagrams; (fo. 38) notes on spherical trigonometry; (fo. 42) rough diagrams. Fos 38 to 51 are additional inserted leaves. On fo. 2: 'Thos. P. Williams, St. John's, March 19th, 1810'.

The notes are continued from MS.Add.4310. The text is continued in reverse from the end of the book on the versos of fos 34-19. The rest of the versos are blank. Fos 38 to 51 are additional inserted leaves. On fo. 2: 'Thos. P. Williams, St. John's, April 2d, 1810'.

The versos are mostly blank. On the front cover: 'Thos. P. Williams. Waring, Augst. 28th, 1810'.

MS.Add.4313: Notes on fluxions, 1810, 94 folios.

On fo. 1: 'Thos. P. Williams. Fluxions, Augt. 29th, 1810'. On the front cover is the same, in a different hand. The second hand also occasionally appears in the notes on the versos. The versos are mostly blank.

MS.Add.4314: Notes on algebra and mathematics, 1810, 33 folios.

(Fo. 1) Notes on algebra; (fo. 19) notes on series by increments; (fo. 26) notes on miscellaneous problems. The versos are mostly blank. On the front cover: 'Thos. P. Williams. Algebra. Augst. 29th, 1810'.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Pierce Williams was born at Kingston, Jamaica. He entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1807 (B.A., 1812), and was a Fellow, 1813-1816. He was ordained deacon in 1812, and priest in 1813, and became Headmaster of Wolmer's School, Kingston, Jamaica, 1813-1814. He was Rector of Clarendon, 1815-1820, and of St Elizabeth, 1820-1851; Archdeacon of Cornwall, Jamaica, 1850-1862; and Rector of St James, 1851-1862. He died on 23 August 1862 at the Rectory, Montego Bay, aged 73.
