(i) Finch Smith reports progress with his project because of the forthcoming meeting of the Chetham Society. He has been unable to appoint a curate, hence he has been unable to continue his work on volume 3 of the Admission Registers of the Manchester School, 1807-37 (this would later be published as Chetham Society, old ser., xciii and xciv (1874)). 4 Mar 1873.
(ii) Relating to copies of volumes 1 and 2 of the School register which Finch Smith received from Mr Simms. He mentions that he has written to Mr Mayor of St John's College, Cambridge, and he intends to write to Mr Turner, Vice-Principal of Brasnose College, Oxford, who was intimate with Mr Watson, the subject of Crossley's enquiries. 5 Feb 1875.
(iii) Concerning Crossley's enquiries relating to the late John Watson, grandson of the historian of Halifax. Finch Smith had not yet heard from Mr Mayor of St John's College, Cambridge. 19 Feb 1875.
(iv) Concerning his reply to Mr R. T. Elsdale concerning the notice about his later father. He also mentions that he has still not received a note from Mr Mayor. 26 Feb 1875.
