Edmund Clifton Stoner was born in 1899 and educated at Bolton Grammar School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. After doing research at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge he was appointed Lecturer in Physics at the University of Leeds in 1924. He was promoted to a Readership in 1927. In 1928 he accepted a research fellowship at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, which he held concurrently with his post at Leeds. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1937. In 1939 he was appointed to the newly created Chair of Theoretical Physics at Leeds. He became Cavendish Professor of Physics at Leeds in 1951, until his retirement in 1963. He died in 1968.
