Miles Bland was born in Sedbergh in 1786. He attended Sedbergh School before entering St John's College, where he graduated BA, as second wrangler, in 1808. Bland was elected to a Fellowship of the College in the same year, and later became Tutor, Moderator and Public Examiner in Mathematics. He published various Biblical commentaries and mathematical textbooks, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Society of Antiquaries, and the Royal Astronomical Society. He died in 1867.
