Scope and Content

The collection contains a wide variety of papers from John Marshall’s educational career including pre-university schooling from Glasgow Academy, general university education at University of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and specialized education in medicine and veterinary studies from Anderson’s College and Glasgow Veterinary College. These papers consist of certificates of attendance, class tickets, awards and medals, and matriculation cards. Also included in the collection are personal papers including prescriptions and remedies, letters of reference, and personal correspondence.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Marshall was born 1871 as the eldest son of Thomas Marshall, a merchant of Glasgow. John studied medicine at Anderson's College, University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow from 1886-1893, before joining the Glasgow Veterinary College in 1893. He was married to Ada Watson and they resided in Horncastle, Lincolnshire where John worked professionally as a veterinarian. He died the 21 September 1938, aged 67, in Horncastle.

Arrangement

The original order of the fonds has been maintained and arranged into two series, educational papers and personal papers, which reflect the major activities of the creator over the years. The educational series has been arranged into four subseries reflecting the specialized areas of education John Marshall received.

Custodial History

This collection was given to Professor Donald Lawson of the Glasgow University Department of Veterinary Surgery in 1977 by Cliff who acquired the papers from the solicitors of John Marshall’s daughter. The collection was then deposited in Glasgow University Archives in 1986 by s member of staff at the Glasgow Veterinary School upon Professor Lawson retiring.
