Alexander Gibson was the younger brother of James Gibson-Craig. He went to live with his brother John in the 1780s to join the merchant business of the family Gibson of Durie which had been established in Danzig in the seventeenth century. He played a key role in the defense of Danzig in 1807 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, in 1814 he became British Consul and then Consul-General of Hanover.
