Records of the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (Aberdeen district)

Deposited in the University in Feb 1968, and May 1972, by D. W. Craig, District Secretary, Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers, Aberdeen. The 1968 deposit comprised original copies of the union's printed journal, The Operative Masons' and Granite Cutters' Journal, and microfilm copies of its institutional records. The institutional records were to be deposited in the head office of the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers in London, with a microfilm copy held locally. In the end, the records remained in Aberdeen, and in 1972 they were deposited in the University.

The Aberdeen Operative Masons' and Stonecutters' Society was established in 1888. It amalgamated with the United Operative Masons' and Granite Workers' Union in 1896, forming the United Operative Masons' and Granite Cutters' Union. In 1921, the United Operative Masons' and Granite Cutters' Union joined with the Scottish Amalgamated Society of Tile Fixers, Marble Workers and Fireplace Builders, and the Associated Paviors' Federal Union, to form the Building and Monumental Workers' Association of Scotland. This became part of the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers in Apr 1942; and by 1972, had joined the newly-created Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians.

Arthur Marsh and Victoria Ryan's Historical Directory of Trade Unions, 4 vols (Aldershot: Gower, 1980 - 1984) also contains useful information about the development of individual unions, at both the national and local level.
