Scope and Content

The collection reflects one of David Hall's major collecting interests, 20th century Private Press publishing. There are particular strengths: publishing in Cambridge, represented by the work of the Rampant Lions Press, David Kindersley and theChristmas books produced by the Cambridge University Press printer; amongst a broad range of British presses the work of the Nonesuch Press and the Whittington Press (including their journal of printing Matrix; from America the work of Bruce Rogers and D. B. Updike; fine printing in Europe by the Stichting "De Roos", and the Officina Bodoni. There are also reference books on printing, bibliographies of the privatespresses and a collection of the works of Stanley Morison.

Administrative / Biographical History

David Hall studied history at Durham University between 1965 and 1968, and then worked for Cambridge University Library from 1976 to 2005. He has collected books on several topics, including poetry and Quaker history, and his collection ofprivate press books has been assembled over the past five decades.
