James Joseph Sylvester to Barbara Leigh Bodichon

Scope and Content

Autograph letter, signed, 3¼pp. 8vo, 60 Maddox Street.

'Dear Madame Bodichon, I quite overlooked an engagement for tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at a meeting connected with a society for promoting education among the working classes where owing to peculiar / / circumstances it is absolutely necessary I should be present --I would much prefer to have been walking in a Sussex lane instead but have been unable to escape the unpleasant circumstance that I am bound as a matter of duty to attend / / the meeting and so doing it would be difficult for me to reach Scalands' Gate the same evening -- On the whole therefore I think it better to ask your permission to let me postpone the visit to a more propitious occasion. With my / / best regards to Dr Bodichon believe me yours very truly JJ Sylvester.'
