Scope and Content

Autograph letter, signed, 3+pp. 8vo, Athenaeum Club letterhead.

'My dear Smith -- I never was so vexed with myself for making such a stupid mistake on Saturday evening -- I thought you named the Reform Club and having dined with you there before took for granted that it was there I was to meet you. When I was told you had not ordered dinner I then thought I remembered that it was for Tuesday and not / / for Saturday I was invited and told the porter of the Club so. I thought I distinctly remembered that Tuesday was the day and cried out 'How foolish to have mistaken the day -- now I recollect it was for Tuesday I was asked' -- I am very sorry indeed through the fault of my memorial powers and owing to the / / excitement of the preparations for my approaching departure, to have made you and yr friends wait dinner for me and to have caused you to throw away a place at the opera --It is most vexatious!-- When I returned to the Club from dining with a Suburban Niece, it was too late to join you at the opera! I don't leave before Sunday / / week next -- Yours very truly JJ Sylvester'
