James Joseph Sylvester to Barbara Leigh Bodichon

Scope and Content

Autograph letter, signed, 2½pp. 8vo, 60 Maddox St W.

'My dear Madame Bodichon, I am extremely sorry that I have to say that in consequence of the unusual pressure upon my time occasioned by a mass of examination papers which I am bound to look over and send the returns in by tomorrow evening or / / the next morning and which are much heavier than I had calculated upon their being, I am absolutely incapacitated from fulfilling my engagement to dine with you this evening which I exceedingly regret and beg you to have the kindness to accept my apologies for as I believe it would be impossible for me to / / get through my work without devoting my whole time to it this evening as well as tomorrow. Believe me your truly JJ Sylvester.'
