Scope and Content

The material in this sub-collection - relating to the television programmes Sewell proposed, wrote, narrated, and appeared on - was scattered throughout his papers and was brought together during the process of cataloguing and arranged chronologically. It includes:

-draft scripts

-Sewell's handwritten research notes

-cuttings of published material

Sewell filed the material relating to the various television projects he was involved with in A4 brown envelopes, gave each envelope a title, either the name he assigned to a project, or the name it was broadcast as, and these titles have been retained.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sewell became a high-profile media figure as a result of his popularity as a journalist and this led to him making many appearances on television from the 1990s onwards.

His erudite wit and knowledge of the art world meant that he was often invited to appear as a guest on television programmes and the subject matter of these ranged from art to more general topics such as dogs and cooking. In addition to these occasional appearances, he also proposed projects and wrote scripts on more academic subjects, although not all of these were commissioned or shown. In 2003, he both wrote and presented the modern-day pilgrimage he made to Santiago de Compostela for Wag TV which was shown on Channel 5 as the series The Naked Pilgrim - Road to Santiago. This won the Sandford St Martin's Premier Award for television in 2004.
