Sir Olaf Kirkpatrick Caroe was born in 1892 and educated at Winchester and Magdalen College, Oxford. As a 2nd Lieutenant and Captain, The Queen's Regiment, he served in India from 1914 to 1919. Later he followed a career in the civil service in India until 1947.
