Llangybi Shop Account Books

Scope and Content

14 shop account books dating from 1790 to 1816, the majority of which are written in Welsh with the later ones in English. They provide a colourful picture of life in the Llangybi area, listing personal names, place names and goods sold at the shop e.g. tobacco, sugar, treacle, nails for clogs, thread, buttons, handkerchiefs, scissors, combs, rice, gun powder, candles, snuff, muslin, linen, soap, tea, coffee.

Administrative / Biographical History

No administrative details regarding the shop at Llangybi were available at time of compilation of description, other than what could be gathered from the account books. Evidently, the general store served the surrounding community, and supplied the local people with a great variety of provisions. It appears also that the shopkeeper took on the role of a banker, lending money to various individuals.

Llangybi is located in Eifionydd, Caernarfonshire.
