Papers of the Goldendale Iron Company

Scope and Content

The Collection comprises 12 ordnance survey maps and 14 plans relating to the Goldendale Iron Company in Tunstall. The maps mark iron works and collieries in and around the Tunstall area of Staffordshire. Local buildings are also shown. The plans relate to ventilation of works, estate plans of Clough Hall, GoldenHill, local collieries, and local farmlands. The papers also include a collection of deeds which belonged to W.E.Dunn of the Company. The deeds relate to property and land ownership of individuals in the following places in Staffordshire. Audley, Barlaston, Balterley, Halmer End (manor of Audley), Park End (manor of Audley), Shelton, Stone, Talke (alias Talk-o'-th-Hill), Tunstall, Wolstanton.

Administrative / Biographical History

Goldendale Iron Company Ltd, pig iron manufacturers Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. The company was founded by Hugh Henshall Williamson and his brother Robert ans was in existence by 1848. By 1921 it was one of five iron companies in the Potteries with its own blast furnace. It ceased operating in the 1960s.

The maps and plans are arranged separately, the deeds are arranged alphabetically by place name and a small miscellaneous group.

There are no restrictions on access to these papers. Viewing is by prior appointment.

The collection was deposited as a gift in1984.
