Scope and Content

Sketch book entitled Portraits of school girls and other persons containing sketches by Caroline Cuffley Giberne (d 1885), missionary teacher in India of her pupils (19), with brief descriptions of them, together with letters, newscuttings, photographs and samplers of her pupils.

Administrative / Biographical History

Caroline Cuffley Giberne (d 1885) served with the Society for Female Education in the East and was stationed in Ceylon. By 1844, she was a Church Missionary Society (CMS) missionary teacher and was stationed in Kadathapuram, Tinnevelley, South India. She served with the CMS until 1862. She died at Bath on 14 June 1885.

Custodial History

Following the merger of the Selly Oak Colleges and the University of Birmingham in 1999 the custodial ownership of collections belonging to the Selly Oak Colleges and held at the Orchard Learning and Resource Centre (OLRC) was transferred to the University. These collections now form part of the University's Special Collections Department and are available for consultation at the Main Library on the University's Edgbaston Campus.

These include the surviving archives of the Society for Female Education in the East (FES) and the official archives of the CMS, which contains materials relating to Miss Giberne's service with the CMS, South India Mission, including annual and other letters and half-year reports of female schools which she sent to CMS headquarters, 1841-61 (GB150 CMS/C I2/O 102).
