The Society was established in 1828 by current and former students of the School of Arts, in partnership with the Leith Mechanics Institute and the Edinburgh Mechanics Subscription Library. The Society was set up for the public at large with three main aims: "to afford weekly payments during sickness until members are in their 60th or 65th year; to afford annuities to members for life after their 60th or 65th year; for life assurance".
