The Electrical Trades union was formed in 1889 from a conference between the Amalgamated Society of Telegraph and Telephone Construction Men and the Union of Electrical Operatives. In 1968 it merged with the Plumbing Trades Union to form the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunication and Plumbing Union (EETPU). In 1992 the EETPU merged with the Amalgamated Engineering Union to form the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU). The AEEU merged with the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union (MSF) to form Amicus in 2001, and in 2007 Amicus merged with the Transport and General Workers Union to form Unite.
