Scope and Content

This notebook includes extensive notes relating to Joseph Rowntree's and John Fenwick's visits to other factories in Britain and Europe, with details of machinery, mixings, production methods, packing, costing, wage rates and workforce, etc; and similar notes taken during visits to York by managers and employees of other companies. The information relates to cocoa, chocolate and a great variety of mixings for centres. The visits discussed include; to London, to search for skilled workmen, with details of requirements and men interviewed; to Birmingham, Bristol and London, 1872; and to Paris (Menier's), 1874. There are also price lists and wrappings from other companies; and cuttings concerning the Paris Exhibition, 1878. The notebook has an index of names, firms, ingredients, processes, machinery, and types of products.
