Administrative / Biographical History

Jessie Grant Cameron was born in Glasgow on 5 January 1896  . Her father, William Lindsay Cameron, was a law clerk. Prior to attending university, Jessie was a student at Hutcheson's Grammar School. Jessie attended the University of Glasgow from 1914-1918  , taking classes in Mathematics (Higher Ordinary), French (Ordinary) and Latin (Ordinary) in her first year; Mathematics (Intermediate Honours), Natural Philosophy (Ordinary) and English Ordinary in her second; Mathematics (Advanced Honours), Natural Philosophy (Higher) and Laboratory in her third, and Mathematics (Advanced Honours) and Natural Philosophy (Higher) in her fourth year. She was awarded first class certificates in French (Ordinary) and Mathematics (Higher Ordinary) in 1915. She graduated with an MA in November 1918  , and returned the following year as a postgraduate student, studying Chemistry, Practical Chemistry, Astronomy and Education. She graduated with a BSc in November 1919  and subsequently lectured at the Royal Technical College until she married Thomas Black Duncan (MA 1915, BSc 1921) in August 1924. Jessie died in Glasgow on 16 December 1978  .
