Papers of: Acland, Theodore Dyke (1851-1931)

Scope and Content

The collection comprises medical notes and associated personal material. MSS.835-853 comprise notes by Acland on scientific and medical subjects, spanning the period from his schooldays to the First World War. MSS.3652-3653 are Acland's notes of clinical lectures given in 1876-1877 at St. Thomas's Hospital by Charles Murchison (1830-1879). MSS.5798-5800 comprise loose papers: letters, wall-charts and diplomas.

Administrative / Biographical History

Theodore Dyke Acland was educated at Winchester College and Christchurch College Oxford, obtaining his MD at Oxford in 1883. He was elected FRCP in 1889. In 1893 he was appointed physician to St. Thomas's Hospital, London. During the First World War he served as consulting physician to the London district. Arrangement

The three blocks of manuscripts comprise different types of material, as follows: MSS.835-853 comprise notes by Acland on scientific and medical subjects and are arranged in chronological order; MSS.3652-3653 are Acland's notes of clinical lectures by Charles Murchison; and MSS.5798-5800 comprise loose papers, within which the arrangement being letters in MS.5798, wallcharts in MS.5799 and diplomas in MS.5800.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Presented by I W G Acland, 1931 (acc. 89161); some items purchased as part of Acland's library, sold at Hodgson's, London, 23 Oct. 1931, lots 949-950 (acc. 83561-83562).
