Administrative / Biographical History

The Incorporated Association of Headmasters was initiated at a meeting in October 1890. In 1967 its title was changed to the Headmasters' Association. Its objects are to safeguard the interests of its members, their character and status and the educational principles they support. In January 1978 they merged with the Association of Headmistresses to form the Secondary Heads' Association.

Archivist's Note

An interim check-list of the records is available in the Centre's searchroom. An authority file exists for the Headmasters' Association (GB 152 AAR1374). The Centre also holds the records of the Association of Headmistresses (MSS.188) and some records of the London branch of the Secondary Heads' Association (MSS.218).

Custodial History

The records were collected by Janet Druker on the 23rd September 1974. A further deposit was made in July 1980 after selection by A.G. Tough in June 1980. They have been deposited in the Centre on indefinite loan.
