Administrative / Biographical History
Morley Industrial Co-operative Society was established in 1866. By 1897 the society had 6000 members, 12 grocery branches and departments in drapery, boots, outfitting, butchery, drugs and coal. The Society continued to grow and in Apr 1899 they moved to new central premises and also opened the society's first bakery. In Nov 1922 a War Memorial was unveiled in the society's large hall. The society continued to flourish and in 1932 Churwell Society transferred to Morley Industrial Co-operative Society. In 1933 a dairy was opened and in 1937 the Emporium and Fish and Greengrocery department were opened. By 1950 the society had 15,000 members.
In 1970 the Society transferred its engagments to the Co-operative Retail Services.
