Wakefield Borough Industrial Co-operative Society was formed in 1867. By 1957 the Society had 12,615 members and branches at; Abrigg Road, Sandal; 187 Alverthorpe Road, New Scarboro'; Denby Dale Road; 130 Doncaster Road, Belle Vue; 145,147 Kirkgate; 52 Leeds Road, Newton Bar; 324 Leeds Road, Newton Hill; Moxon Street, Outwood; Newmillerdam; Portobello Road, Eastmoor; 47 Thornes Lane; 44 York Street; 69 High Street, Crofton; Green Lane, Featherstone; Drury Lane, Altofts, Normanton; Market Street, Normanton; Wakefield Road, Woodhouse, Normanton; Weeland Road, Sharlston Common; 150 Aberford Road, Stanley; Long Causeway, Stanley; 29 School Lane, Walton and School Lane, Wrenthorpe. In 1963 the Society tranferred to Barnsley British Co-operative Society which in turn transferred its engagments to the Co-operative Retail Services in 1971.
