Administrative / Biographical History
Cawthorne Industrial Co-operative Society was formed in 1867. The first Committee was made up of Charles Wemyss (President), John Morley (Treasurer), Joshus Barraclough (Secretary), and George Shaw, James Stephenson, George Mosley, Benjamin Jubb, Walter Moxon, Henry Child, Charles Hutchinson, and Joseph Kitson. The first meeting was held on Monday 13 Jan 1868 at the boy's school, Cawthorne.
The Society merged with Barnsley British Co-operative Society sometime around 1903. This Society then later merged to become part of the Co-operative Retail Services in 1971.
