Letter from James Simmons to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter from Simmons, a shoemaker. He says that despite poor labour conditions he is a comfortable as most of the others who work in the same trade. He says he is becoming interested in study, particularly astronomy, but this is leading to his shoemaking work becoming neglected and him not earning as much money. Simmons asks Owen if he would assist him in donating money for astronomical maps. He says the has given some lectures and met with success and is considering touring the country giving more if he had suitable equipment.
