Letter from 'An Independent Vestryman' to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Owen is informed by a unnamed vestryman that a local "Methodistical" Preacher is the person behind the rise in the rent assessment on Owen's Gray's Inn Road Property from £500 to £750. The vestryman believes this action is both "illegal and unjust"; illegal because the preacher concerned refused to adhere to the law of the land and Rate both his and all other proprietary chapels within the Parish and unjust because no other place of similar character and occupation is rated so high.

Owen is advised that if he makes an appeal to the Quarter Sessions he should quote a rate of 1s 6d in the pound, and here the vestryman provides detailed figures to back up this assessment.

The author signs the letter as "An Independent Vestryman not wishing to derive a profit by low and unjust rates".
