Letter from Wm. Clegg to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Clegg explains that he has been too busy to update Owen on happenings [in Manchester], but when Owen arrives in Manchester he will learn all about them. Mr [John] Fielden is also due in Manchester to attend a meeting, at which there will be "several other Master Manufacturers".

Clegg writes that they [the union?] sent out a Missionary to visit Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield and notes they receive daily reports that progress is "very encouraging". The appointment of the Missionary is described as being "special" and "desirable", especially in relation to matters at Derby [ 'the great Derby turn-out]; four further Missionaries have been selected by delegates, and are awaiting instructions from the Committee.
