Letter from Walter Newall to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

A manuscript memo forms the basis of this letter that is entitled: "Memorandum relative to the formation of a society for the propagation of social science." The memo states that society needs to be reorganized, and that even though the work of Robert Owen has helped to improve the "state of the public mind," real progress can not begin until the working classes achieve a "higher standard of cooperative power and intelligence."

The memo continues, stating that a committee has been formed, and that one of its objectives is to gather documentation, books, and models that are related to this enterprise. This committee wishes to be in contact with all people who would like to help in this regard. Points are expressed detailing the retrieval of these documentation, how they should be used, their accessibility, and how the committee itself should be governed.
