Letter from Thomas Atkins to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter in which Atkins asks Owen to obtain for him a interview with Her Majesty's Government. The request is made so that Atkins can offer to the Government, and the "most competent scientific men" it contains, a scientific means of effecting the "destruction of Sebastapol, the Russian Fleet, And Army" and put to an end the Crimean War. Details of how this this would be achieved are noted; a "submarine steam tug" to be constructed in 2 months at the cost of £5,000 being the main weapon with Atkins explaining that he would be willing to travel with the machine to the Black Sea.
