Letter from C. T. Watkins to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter asking Owen to confirm if, as reported in the Manchester Journal, he will be leaving for Paris upon conclusion of the May, Manchester Congress (an annual event organised and attended by British Owenites). The letter goes on to express the writer's concern that Owen, rather than stay and oversee the development of those policies decided upon by members of Congress, will leave to become the leader of the French Socialists, noting that "while France has no Robert Owen, England has but one".The writer concludes by wishing Owen congratulations on his forthcoming birthday, desiring that each one be preceded by pleasing accounts from his family at New Harmony (the first community established by Owen in America).
