Letter from John Hughes to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter: Hughes apologizes for taking the liberty of contacting Owen when he is unknown to him, and further, to ask Owen to grant him a favour. Hughes has been developing new signals to be used by the navy; originally rocket signals, but after revision an upgraded version of the present lanterns. After great expense and hard work these new lanterns are ready to be presented to the Lord Admiralty, but in order to do so Hughes needs £6 in order to build lanterns fit for this purpose. Hughes requests monetary aid from Owen.

Enclosed with the letter is another addressed to Hughes from Sir Thomas Hardy, from the Admiralty Office, dated 4 Jan 1832. The letter relates to Hughes' development of new ship signals, and is there as evidence to back-up his claims of carrying out this work.
