Letter from Joshua Vines to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter: Vines begins the letter by stating he is a supporter of Owen's system for the "amelioration and improvement of mankind." He had the pleasure of reading in the morning paper the news that a new association had been formed based on his system "for the education and employment of the ignorant and destitute of all denominations." Vines then gives his opinion in detail on educating and employing the destitute, and believes the only way to achieve this is through rules and compelling people to adhere to them for an extended period of time until they are able to follow the "cooperative plan" themselves.
