Letter from Robert Owen to the Central Board of the Universal Community Society of Rational Religionists

Scope and Content

Copy of a manuscript letter in which Owen discusses matters relating the proposed community at Queenwood, East Tytherley, Hampshire. Owen refers to the deed being secured on a 99 year lease from Mr [Isaac] Goldsmid, and that at a meeting held in Birmingham on the 26th Sepember the appointments of Heaton Aldam as Superintendent and Mr [John] Finch as Deputy Foreman were made.

Further details of the proceedings from the meeting follow, with Owen writing that the conversations which took place convinced him that the "most influential members of the branches" there were "not yet prepared either with food or experience for more than a preliminary working community...and that the members of the branches are too impractical to wait for the necessary accumulation of food to commence a community". This being the case, Owen feels that he cannot take position of Acting Governor, but instead advises the Central Board to appoint John Finch of Liverpool, Charles Frederick Green of London and Heaton Aldam of Whalley Hall Derbyshire to manage the community.
