Correspondence of Anna Maria Goldsmid

Scope and Content

Anna Goldsmid tends to write on behalf of her father and the correspondence mainly concerns Owen letting his land at Queenwood. There is much discussion about the land of Mr Baring Wall which it seems is adjacent to Goldsmid's land and which Owen also wants to let.

Administrative / Biographical History

Anna Maria Goldsmid was the daughter of Isaac Lyon Goldsmid who was the landowner of Queenwood Estate that Owen set up a colony on. She was an expert linguist and spoke Italian, French, German and Hebrew. She helped her father in his work, most prominently in setting up University College, London and West London Synagogue. She founded the Jews infants school, London (1841) and re-established the Jews deaf and dumb home (1863).
