Letter from Robert Owen to Sir John Parkington

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter in which Owen praises Sir John Parkington for his "independence of thought and action" as a member of the House of Commons through, for example, his moving for a Royal Commission on Education to be established [this duly happened later in 1858 under the chairmanship of the Duke of Newcastle and led to the Newcastle Report of 1861].As a consequence of this and similar actions, Owen calls on Parkington to fulfil his duty by leading and directing members of the House on matters requiring urgent social change. The letter also included a copy "Millennial Gazette", which Owen considers may be the last edition.
