Letter from Benjamin Morrell to Robert Owen

Archive Unit

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter, in which Owen is asked to provide answers to several allegations in regard to his religious beliefs laid against him in a series of lectures delivered in Keighley by Rev. B. Grant. Morrell asks was Owen ever an Atheist, did he carry out his schemes on the "Atheistical plan", did he ever begin to use the terms "God" and "First Cause" for the purpose of deceiving the public and were the members who entered New Harmony required to pay £50 and "disbelieve in God" before they could do so?

Morrell explains that he does not "credit" the allegations, but wishes to affirm the truth as he intends to write a small pamphlet or two in reply to the lectures.
