Letter from James Lindsay to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter James Lindsay suggests to Owen of forming some form of relationship with the Scots New Zealand Company in order to acquire the ability to exercise "vast influence over large numbers of men who will not be otherwise accessible."

Lindsay goes on to inform Owen that 25 members of the Unitarian Chapel in Edinburgh have seceded due to a "very bold sermon," which preached ideas "almost identical" as those expressed in Rational Religion. Lindsay suggests that if these men were to be "properly encouraged," it could spell a new era in the "Bible Religion of Edinburgh" and help spread socialism in the city.

In closing Lindsay congratulates Owen on "the elevation which Socialism has now reached," and hopes Owen will live to see its "banner waving proudly over England."
