Letter from [?] to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter, in which an answer to the question, 'Why are the Working Classes who produce all the wealth in world in poverty and misery', which Owen is due to pose at a forthcoming meeting, is proffered here to be "that they do not produce it in sufficient qualities for themselves and the rest of mankind". This, the author strongly believes, is not due to the introduction of machinery but centres more on the "productive powers" of the soil being unable to match the increased demand which is coming from huge population growth.

Enclosed is a manuscript pamphlet which discusses at length the reasons for the current "national distress" and the authors belief it concerns a "National Deficiency in our means of Subsistence".
