Letter from Charles West to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter West asserts his devotion to the system of the Equitable Labour Exchange, but explains at length of his entitlement to "personal comforts" [as Secretary of the Exchange at the Rotunda, London]. One compliant voiced by West, is that receiving his salary in "Labour Notes" rather than sterling causes him difficulties when he tries to pay for things such as his rent. He notes that when he moved from Kidderminster to London it was not made clear to him that he would receive his whole salary in "Labour Notes".
