Cooper writes of his desire to gain employment in London, describing it as "the modern Babylon", his discontent with his current position as a clerk for Messrs. Halliday and Co. Manufacturing Chemists, Hudderfield and of a dearth of "Society" for Mrs Cooper and himself in Huddersfield.
