This item consists of a manuscript letter on the reverse of a printed handbill.
The handbill, titled ' Challenge to the Rev. Dr. Perrey from the Socialists of Reading', has been produced in response to recent sermons delivered in that town by Perrey in which he linked Socialism to Atheism. The handbill requests Perrey, or any other competent person, to meet Robert Owen, or one of his Missionaries, for a public discussion on the relationship between Socialism and Christainity.
The manuscript letter on the verso of the handbill discusses the proposed discussion, with Owen told that he is not expected to attend as Perrey is not considered of "sufficient consequence" to demand his attendance - his name was used as a means of inducing Perrey [to the discussion].
