Letter from James Nockles [with a P.S. by Alex Campbell] to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter from James Nockles, with a P.S. by Alex Campbell. Mr Nockles writes to express the disappointment of his Branch that Owen is unable to lecture to them in Glasgow but says they will accept Mr Nash as a substitute. Nockles asks Owen that if he is unable to stay for any length of time in Glasgow, would he agree to meet their members only, as several of them "are on the height of expectation of seeing you."

Alex Campbell, the Branch's missionary, adds that he has arrived from England after having visited and addressed Branches at Bath, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester. He writes that he has met many Socialists who are eager to form new Branches, and that the "leading men" among the working classes everywhere that he had been are "advocates for the Rational System of Society."
