Letter from Joseph Hansom to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter: Hansom informs Owen of the position of the builders' strike in Birmingham, and produces a copy of a statement that he has written that will be presented to a number of building lodges in Birmingham. This statement declares that members of the union will not work unless conditions change, the importance of their work is acknowledged, and new prices are fixed for their labour in building a new school, which workers were not consulted. Hansom believes that how the situation in Birmingham is resolved will have repercussions across the country.
