Letter from Thomas Allsop to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

This manuscript letter opens with Allsop noting he has enclosed a paper on "machinery"(not present).

Discussion turns to the raising of subscriptions and donations for the "institution" [Institution of the Industrious Classes, founded at Gray's Inn Road in December of 1831]. Allsop suggests a scheme whereby a "brief and intelligible statement of the objects of the institution are written, printed or painted in large letters were appended to the houses of each member of the committee", alternatively he suggests the distribution of "circular letters addressed to every opulent or apparently respectable individual in concise terms".
