Letter from Robert Owen to Prince Metternich

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter written to accompany copies of Owen's weekly journals, which Metternich had expressed he wished sent to him. Owen explains that the documents he sends are "based on laws of human nature unknown to change" and will "produce the highest permanent good to all". Owen believes Metternich "may have much influence in preparing the Aristocracy of Europe for this change", a change which will be for the "permanent interest of themselves".

Owen writes he believes the result of social upheaval will be a "European Republic compound of independent Republics in each state or district" having the same "interest, government, laws and institutions".
