George Cracroft, an engraver at the Royal Worcester pottery factory was the 4th son of Lieut Edmund Cracroft, an officer in the Bombay Infantry. He married Emily Seely in 1840, and had three children by her, but by 1852 they had separated. Cracroft had a relationship with Mary Ann Stevenson, by whom he had six more children.
