Letter from Montgomery to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Montgomery writes of the imminent prospect of the United States taking land from the Mexican Republic [annexation of Texas]. The implication this will have on Britain's dealings with Mexico is discussed, with Montgomery claiming that "the United States will be ready and responsible for fair justice to Great Britain" and will certainly be a "better sponsor and more satisfactory dealer than distracted, unstable Mexico".
